Understanding UHIP: Coverage, Visits, and Reimbursement Tips

Learn what UHIP covers, how to see a doctor, and reimbursement tips to avoid high medical costs in Ontario.

What UHIP Covers

The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) provides basic health coverage for international students and their dependents in Ontario. It includes doctor visits, hospital stays, emergency services, and some medical tests. Prescription drugs are covered only if administered in a hospital. Routine dental care, eyeglasses, and elective procedures are not covered.

How to Use UHIP at a Doctor’s Visit

When you see a doctor, bring your UHIP card and a valid passport or photo ID. For walk-in clinics or hospital visits, show your card at registration. If you need a specialist, you must get a referral from a family physician first. Always confirm that the provider accepts UHIP before treatment.

Reimbursement and Avoiding High Costs

If you pay out-of-pocket for covered services, keep all receipts and submit a claim with the claim form and original documents. Claims should be filed within 12 months of the service date. To avoid unexpected bills, ask if a service is covered and get written approval before expensive procedures. If you are unsure about coverage, contact the UHIP office at your school before receiving care.
